Lumix Cameras
Lumix cameras are considered to be some of the better constructed and best values in digital cameras now available. Panasonic is the manufacturer of the Lumix brand. Prices range from the low $100 range through 400. This makes the Lumix models affordable for most buyers who want a high quality camera at a moderate price.
Panasonic has reshaped the Lumix camera line, departing from the very rectangular shaped body to a more rounded look. The newer Lumix line starts at entry level with the newer S1 and S3 models. As is typical with Lumix, these are small enough to carry in a pocket. Both S models have 12 megapixel sensors, which will produce clear photos of most any usable size. The S line also has a quality optical zoom lens. This is a good buy for those users who want to stay under the $200 price.

Next in the series are the FH2 and FH5 models. These are still somewhat basic but offer a higher 14 megapixel picture quality and an even better Leica lens. The lens is a 28mm wide angle and progress higher with optical and digital zoom which makes these FH models very versatile for a wide range of situations. Boxier than the S models, the FH2 and FH5 retain the small size. The FP5 and FP7 models are next up in price range, and offer upgrades not available in the lower models like touch screen controls. These are very smooth looking with no obtruding optics. The screen on the FP7 is a comfortable for viewing 3.5” size.
Higher still in the range of Lumix models are the FH25 and FH27.These cameras have an 8x lens, with 720p HD video available and a 16.1 megapixel rating. The FH27 offers a 3” touch screen. These cameras are in the $300 MSRP area.
The top of the just under $500 Lumix cameras are the Z models. The ZS10 is a perfect travel companion, equipped with full function HD video recording, a 24mm wide angle lens and an optical zoom of 16X, that will go to 33X with the digital zoom function. This camera has a night mode for stable low light photos. ZS10 incorporates a built-in GPS receiver that will record your location and the time for each image.
You can use that information afterwards with mapping software to tell exactly where and when the photos were shot. The camera is pretty amazing for a little more than 4” package. The only downside to this model is that its popularity has made it a bit tough to find for purchase. Lumix cameras are always exciting products for the amateur digital photographer.
